“Of Love and Other Demons”
Sunday, October 19, 2025
2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. • Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek CA
Of Love and Other Demons is a concert program that explores the many faces of love. Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez’s novel of the same title, this program challenges the audience to reconsider love not only as a romantic ideal, but as an elemental force that shapes human experience in both sublime and tragic ways.
Some of the pieces include: Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet, Francis McBeth’s Of Sailors and Whales, and Richard Wagner’s Elsa’s Procession to the Cathedral. These works create a narrative that reflects love not as a singular emotion, but as a complex, often paradoxical force—a demon, perhaps, that can elevate or consume.

We’ve lost a very important member of our community…
John Pangia played clarinet with the wind symphony for over 30 years. Many of you will remember our concertmaster sitting in the front row of the clarinet section. Having lived a long life rich in music, John died in early May in Walnut Creek, California. He was 89.

We will miss you John (especially the clarinet section).
You will always be well loved and remembered.

Our friend and fellow euphonium player has moved on…
Sam Johnston euphonium player extraordinaire, was a steady fixture in the Contra Costa Wind Symphony almost since its inception. His talents went far beyond his musicianship—he also served as our webmaster and point person for all our digital communications. Besides playing the euphonium, he played and taught ukulele. In retirement, Sam developed a passion for lapidary work and became a certified gemologist, finding joy in the art of working with gemstones. As we commemorate the contributions of our talented brother, we also celebrate the indelible mark he left on the Contra Costa Wind Symphony. His dedication and passion continue to inspire us all.
He is, and will continue to be, missed.
Sam, you will always be well loved and remembered.
